| Children's giveaway, Thursday,
July 15th, 1993.
Today was in honor of children and perhaps the most photographed
event of the week. The Lakota word for children, wakanyejapi,
translates as "Holy Being." Doctor David Nelson, a psychologist
and speaker at International Brotherhood Days, related that he
was often asked for advice on how to raise children. He responded
to these requests by advising that children be raised in a way that
reflected Lakota philosophy and traditional Lakota child rearing
techniques. But bowing to the prejudice in Non-Indian society he
would deliberately neglect to inform those to which he offered such
advice that the advice was based on and borrowed directly from
the culture and traditions of the Lakota people.
